Solving the Mystery: DNA Tests for Your Research

Notes for James Duskin Holland

The following information was received via email from Stephen Ferrell on June 26, 2002.

Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Mayo?,

Please let me introduce myself. My name is Stephen Ferrell. I live in Katy, TX, a suburb of Houston. I am 42. I sell collectible stamps, for a living.

I would like to say that you have a very nice website. It is very well done, very informative, and extremely easy to use. I am also thrilled to find another distant cousin.

My great-grandmother was Mary Jane Hopson (not Hobson). You show her as being married to Thomas J. Holland. However, she was married to my ggrandfather, James Duskin Holland. James and Mary got married Aug. 29, 1881 in Alexandria, Rapides Parish, LA. James died in DeLeon, Comanche Co., TX June 9, 1902 when he fell off of a roof that he was working on and broke his neck. However, he and his family were living in Dublin, Erath Co., TX, at the time, and as of yet, I have not been able to determine where his grave is. Mary Jane HOPSON Holland died June 8, 1930 in Sweetwater, Nolan Co., TX and is buried in the Sweetwater Cemetary. She was born February 12, 1860 in Dekalb Township, Saline Co., AR. She was the daughter of David Hopson and Susan Catherine Glover, who were probably married in Saline Co., AR. Mary Jane was apparently their only child, according to the 1860 and 1870 censuses. Anyway, David Hopson appears to have disappeared shortly after, although whether due to death or what I am not sure. Susan Catherine GLOVER Hopson married James Durrett in AR and moved to LA before 1870.

Now, Thomas J. Holland was married to Mary Jane Burkes in Rankin Co., MS, April 25, 1860. They are listed in the 1880 Vernon Co., LA census, page 125, with 6 children and a son-in-law. Thomas died May 14, 1886 in Dublin, Erath Co., TX. His wife died only one month later, on June 14, 1886, also in Dublin, TX. Thomas also served in 2 Confederate regiments. He served in the 48th Mississippi Infantry, Co. K and the 8th Mississippi Cavalry, Co. F.

Well, I intended to send you more, but it is way late for me. I will try to send you some more info tomorrow.

Your friend and new cousin,

Stephen C. Ferrell
