Notes for Maindert Minor Doodes

Will sealed with the impression of a galley.
Noted to have been a Dutch sea captain and ship owner.
Settled in Virginia about 1650.

From Lancaster Deeds & Wills:
Be it known unto all men by these present that Peter Montague of the County of Lancaster, for & in consideration of a certain quantity of tobacco already in hand hath bargained leased & let & by these present doth bargian let 7 lease unto Minor Doodes his heirs Exrs. Admrs or assignes for the time 7term of fifty four years 200 acres of land with houses fences orchards & plantacons lying and being situated on the North side of the Rappahannh River on the East side Deep Creek as appears by Patent bearing the date 28 Nov 1654 granted unto James Yates by him sold unto Minor Doodes & by him sold unto the said Peter Montague.To have 7 to hold the said land to the sole use & behoofe of the ssaid Minor Doodes his heirs Exrs, Admrs, & assignes for the aforsaid time & term of fifty four years with all profits & tenemts & comoditys with soever in as large & ample manner to all intents & puroses in Law as possibly may or might have been expressed. And the said Peter Montague further bind himselfe his heirs Exrs or assignes to maintain & warrant the land to said Minor Doodes quietly & peaceablly to enjoy the said tenemt, & land for & during the time & terme aforesd.. the said Minor Doodes his heirs or assigne paying the fee Rent yearly & for yearly acknowlegmt one bushel of wheat to the ssid Peter Montague & for confirmation hereof the sd Peter Montague hath hereto set his hand & seal this 20 of Nov 1665.

On 39 September 1671, in James City, VA, he made oath of allegiance and supremacy and was granted naturalization by Govenor Burgesses of the Grand Assembly. Anno Domino 1673 Lancaster Co. Va he signed himself indifferently as Doodes Minor and Minor or Mindert Doodes. His Will is signed Maindert Doodes and his wife signed Mary Doodes, she names her son Doodes Maindart and a daughter Maria Montague.
